Donated Works — Sacred Layers by Aviuk
Each piece in this collection carries its own movement, sound, and spirit — created to honor our ways of life and to share the energy that lives within them.
Aaqtit was my first. It draws the viewer into the motion of a whaling scene — that serene but thrilling time when our people are united in purpose, strength, and gratitude. It captures both calm and intensity, that moment before everything changes.
Aiviq (Walrus) is a mixed-media shadow box featuring a real tusk, painted in rainbow hues. The walrus in the painting carries one rainbow tusk and one white — symbolizing balance, loss, and resilience. It speaks to what remains and what transforms, much like the tides themselves.
Atuusiq (To Sing Out Loud) is a three-part circular canvas series. Each piece holds its own rhythm — feathers, fur, and bone handles forming drums held by three individuals singing with full voice. Separate yet connected, they represent the harmony that comes when people lift their voices together.
And Kick Off Your Maklaks is a warm and playful invitation — a welcoming piece meant for entryways. Across the canvas, “Qanitchaq” (Arctic Entry) is painted alongside maklaks adorned with fur, inviting guests to step inside, leave their shoes, and feel at home.
